On Thursday, November 19, 2009, The Good Hope School inducted five students into the National Honor Society (NHS). In a ceremony held in the James C. Savage Center for the Performing Arts, students, faculty, parents and friends watched as Amaal Idheliah, Bryson Mays, Jeremy Kariah, Zoe Petievich, and Chelsey Hollaway were “tapped” by members of the National Honor Society to join their esteemed ranks.

The guest speaker at the event was Cherelle Herbert, GHS Class of 2005, and Stanford University ’09. Ms. Herbert, an active member of the NHS and the student council while a student at The Good Hope School, spoke to the assembly about the four pillars of the NHS – Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. She encouraged the inductees to use their abilities to make a positive difference and strive for excellence. Quoting Eden Phillpotts, she reminded students that “The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper,” and she urged all the attendees to keep their minds and hearts open to the possibilities life offers.

A reception for parents, faculty and NHS members followed the ceremony in the Ward M. Canaday Library.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.
