The Buccaneer Tennis Club was busy last week (November 3-8, 2009) with members of the St. Croix community playing tennis to benefit the faculty development fund at The Good Hope School. The tournament was sponsored by Clinical Laboratories, George Ashley Architect, HH Tire and Battery, and The Good Hope School Administrative Team.

The 17th Annual Calcutta Tennis Tournament began at The Mermaid Restaurant on Tuesday evening, November 2 where members of the board of trustees, parents, faculty, supporters of the school, and St. Croix tennis enthusiasts gathered for the Calcutta. The evening, sponsored by The Buccaneer Hotel, featured the pairing of teams with organizer Sarah Petievich drawing names of the pre-registered players from a hat. Attendees bid on the mixed doubles teams led by auctioneers Don deWilde and Mike Petievich who successfully pushed the bidding to over $24,000. The tournament benefits and supports the school’s faculty with professional development opportunities and activities that enrich the lives of Good Hope students.

The tournament included 32 teams. Kris Elian and Isabel Brady, were the tournament winners beating Diane Colabella and Michael Petievich in their final match. Consolation Round winners were Lisa Borden and Gregg James over Don deWilde, the tennis pro at The Buccaneer; Good Hope parent Sara Petievich, and Good Hope School Events Coordinator Wanda Evangelista generously contributed their time and expertise for this event. Winners were awarded student art work chosen by Good Hope Artist-in-Residence and Art Teacher Phyllis Biddle, and framed by The Frame Up. Mr. deWilde and Wendy Davy were presented with tennis themed-key chains designed by Whealan Massicott of ib designs.
