FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 04 December 2007 SUBJECT: Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands Dictionary Project Fund Benefits Good Hope
Tuesday, December 4, 2007 , 23 Third Grade students at The Good Hope School received their own copies of a paperback dictionary from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI). The donation was through CFVI's Dictionary Project Fund, established in 2002, with the purpose to help students become lifelong readers. The program was recently expanded from its public school recipients to also serve non-public schools. The dictionaries were well received at Good Hope; with students eager to write their own names on the property label inside the cover of their books. Raquel Cedano, Lower and Middle School Director, was happy to see the Third Grade receive these gifts; "this age group is broadening their vocabulary daily, and the personal dictionaries give them an immediate resource, empowering them to use self-discovery as a tool in their learning." The dictionaries selected to donate were grade appropriate with geography and other national resources included. CFVI shares that its usefulness goes beyond the spellings, pronunciations and definitions it lists; it is a tool for problem solving as a child develops his reading, writing and critical thinking abilities. Dr. Kimble and Mrs. Layton, Good Hope Third Grade teachers, also received a copy of the dictionary and were delighted to see their students so proud of their new books. Mrs. Maxine Moorhead, representing CFVI for the donation, also a Good Hope grandparent, discussed the dictionaries with the students. She took them through a tutorial on how to use the dictionaries and why they were important. The word she chose to have the students find first was "team" telling the student why it was one of her favorite words. The Third Graders were attentive and full of questions as Mrs. Moorhead led them through the lesson. At the end of the school year CFVI requires all recipient schools to report how the dictionaries were used. The Good Hope School looks forward to seeing what a valuable resource these individual books will become to each student. ### |
