The Good Hope School is continuing to take a different twist on Halloween Trick-or-Treating. The children are still excited, dressed in traditional costumes, still parading in Leyden circle; but they are visiting the classrooms and Trick-or-Treating for coins instead of candy. This year the Trick-or-Treating is in preparation for the Lower School 's winter community service project supporting the Aldersville Community Center in Frederiksted.

The students will use the coins collected to purchase items for the personal care gift bags they will assemble for the senior citizens. The students are also preparing skits and songs to perform during their visit to the Aldersville Community Center this winter.

During the classroom visits, teachers and older students enjoyed seeing the students' costume choices. Mrs. Austin's Kindergarten came dressed as their favorite story book characters including a Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and two Big Bad Wolfs; one wolf made sure it was known his character was from The Three Little Pigs. Student teacher, Jane Stromyer, from Salisbury University, interning in The Good Hope School's Kindergarten class, noted "It is wonderful that the students are learning to give back what they receive, a concept of philanthropy that is easy for them to grasp and helps them develop good citizenship. I also applaud the decision to eliminate candy from the school's Halloween traditions!" Jane disguised herself as the mouse from a favorite classroom book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie! The teachers encourage students to make choices on their costume selections that have characters they can relate to, and when possible to make their costumes from recycled goods from home.

For Halloween night, The Good Hope School encourages the students to continue Trick-or-Treating for coins for the Center. The school's beliefs emphasize social responsibility, community service, and compassion towards others. The school community has a strong belief in working collaboratively with our families and the extended community; encouraging personal growth and fostering attributes of respect and responsibility. Through the Halloween activity students are modeling these beliefs and developing their philanthropic habits that produce the community-minded citizenship that St. Croix values.

Additionally, Good Hope's Senior Class is providing a haunted house experience for Lower School students after school hours. The Senior Class transformed the school's pavilion and will take the students through, as well as provide each with a fun Polaroid picture.
