Today at a Good Hope assembly, students were presented with the First Place blue ribbon and trophy for K-12 schools on St. Croix as well as the Grand Champion ribbon and trophy for being the best school booth at the 36th annual Agricultural and Food Fair. The St. Croix Agricultural and Food Fair is held each year during Presidents Day weekend. This year the fair's theme "Make Things Happen: Revive Agriculture in 2007," was the inspiration for the Good Hope booth.
The booth featured students work, grades K - 12, on projects exploring reuse, sustainability, and agricultural best-practices. Two composting projects were shown where revitalizing the soil was achieved through composting. Pre K, the East End Campus, and 1st and 2nd graders have been composting from their lunches or food from home all year, soil samples were displayed as well as seedlings that had been planted in the revitalized soil. Diagrams with illustrations of the soils contents were also presented. The Upper School ran a promotional campaign during the first semester of the school year to support local agriculture. A student played the role of a character, "Granny," who gave humorous yet informative lectures to the student body on home-grown choices in food, storage, and general family care; promoting local foods and natural sustainable ways of living. A history class focused on reviving Cassava cultivation and demonstrated the various food products that might be made from cassava to show versatility of the root vegetable and its benefits.
The entire faculty and student body participate in the preparation of the booth which features their learning in all academic disciplines. Projects selected for the booth helped illustrate revival and renewal of the St. Croix agricultural industry and natural environment. Lower and Middle School art teacher, Pedra Chaffer, leads the Good Hope team in their booth presentation each year.
In addition to the Good Hope booth's success, Good Hope students also won first place in Hovensa's annual art challenge displayed at the fair. This year's art theme was "Growth, It's All in Our Hands". Student winners were: Wylie Crowther Kindergarten, Leandra Diaz 1st grade, Deidra Matthew 5th grade, and Julia Julien 10th grade.
