Today, December 19, 2006, The Good Hope School's Lower School community visited two senior citizen centers where they distributed gifts and sang holiday songs.
The Good Hope 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grades arrived at Wilford Pedro Home for the Elderly (formerly Whim Gardens ) this morning. Each student had the name of a resident and a small gift for them. The classes toured the grounds and knocked on the resident's doors to deliver gifts and wish them a happy holiday season. Seniors were delighted to hear holiday classics such as Jingle Bells and Mama Bake me Johnny Cake. Students took pride in the gifts they selected and wrapped themselves. Most gifts were toiletries, which were suggested by the center. One senior was excited to receive a box of fresh picked fruit.
The Good Hope Pre-K, K, 1 st and, 3 rd grades arrived at Aldersville Senior Center early afternoon to continue their community outreach. The seniors were awaiting the students with a holiday gathering. Students brought baked cookies that the classes made in school, and hand-made ornaments. A Good Hope teacher played the guitar and the young students sang many carols including Feliz Navidad which inspired dancing from both seniors and students alike.
Community service is a critical part of the school's educational program. Good Works at Good Hope is a school-wide community outreach program, where students and teachers select service projects to do as a student body rather than individually. This program gives the younger students an opportunity to shadow and learn from older students, as well as a way to make connections to the community as united caring citizens. Service initiatives are ongoing and have included trash pick-ups, animal shelter support, Interact Club, and more.
he continued development of strength of character, sound values, and a passion for learning is a hallmark of the Good Hope experience. The Good Hope School 's child-centered learning helps students realize their goals academically as well as assists in shaping concerned global citizens for the future. Community service, empowering students to take ownership in their actions, and igniting a passion for learning are principals the school is committed to.
