Today, Phyllis Biddle's "Workers in the Cane Fields" was purchased at The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (CMCArts) for $5,500.  The painting is one in a series of paintings inspired by photographs dated in the late 1800s and early 1900s of men and women working in St. Croix 's cane fields.

Ms. Biddle is an art teacher at The Good Hope School, where she often leads her students to place in the Congressional Art Show; and assists with recommendations for many to attend prestigious art programs. She attended Yale Art School and has an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Painting and Printmaking. Her paintings are in many corporate collections, including The Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond and private collections including The Peck School in Morristown, N.J. and The Robert J. Kennedy Family's private collections.

The anonymous buyer saw "Workers in the Cane Fields" on exhibition at CMCArts and felt it was their way to keep a little bit of St. Croix while spending summers in their Denmark home. One member of the family first visited St. Croix over 40 years ago and has been coming ever since; and recently began residing on island each winter. The painting struck them as unique and representative to St. Croix and Denmark's shared history. They feel through this painting they are able to share with friends in Denmark St. Croix's important story.

This sale signifies a great beginning to CMCArts efforts at supporting local artists and attracting international buyers. More paintings in this series will be available for purchase at The Good Hope School Gala and Auction on January 20, 2007; and The 20th Annual Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit on February 16-19, 2007. Ms. Biddle has been selected as the cover artist for the upcoming exhibit and her work will be featured on posters promoting the event. Both events support The Good Hope Scholarship Fund.

A piece from Biddle's series was selected for the 2007 Island Art & Soul Calendar, currently on sale at CMCArts and various gift shops on island.  Proceeds from the sales of calendars and from artwork on display, such as Biddle's, benefit CMCArts' cultural programs and services, as well as general operating expenses.

CMCArts invites the public to visit the Museum Center at #10 Strand Street Monday through Friday from 12 - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
