The Buccaneer Tennis Club was busy this week (November 1-5, 2006) with members of the St. Croix community playing tennis to benefit the faculty development fund at The Good Hope School. VI Paving sponsored this annually anticipated event, celebrating its Fourteenth year.
The Calcutta Tennis Tournament at The Buccaneer began on Wednesday evening, members of the Board of Trustees, parents, faculty, and other supporters of the School, as well as St. Croix tennis enthusiasts, gathered at the Mermaid Restaurant at a cocktail party sponsored by The Buccaneer , and bid on the various teams playing mixed doubles. Don deWilde, Les Kelley, and Michael Armendariz acted as the auctioneers and the bidding raised over $22,000 for The Good Hope School Faculty Fund. These funds assist in supporting the school's esteemed faculty in training and other activities that enrich the lives of Good Hope students.
Joan Kupfer and Alex Elizee, were the winners against Diane Colabella and Mallory Jenkins in the main draw, 6-4, 6-3. This team defeated five teams on their road to victory. The tournament included 32 teams; partners were drawn out of a hat. In the Consolation Round Stevie Spencer and Bruce Bennett won against Stacey Johnson and Robby Stamper. Their two and half hour match ended at 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Don deWilde, the tennis pro at The Buccaneer; Sara Petievich, a Good Hope parent; Patty Hensley, alumni parent; and Karen Heckman, a Good Hope board member, generously contributed their time and expertise for this event. Winners were awarded student art work that had been chosen by artist-in-residence and art teacher, Phyllis Biddle, and framed by Campen Gallery. The first place female winner was given the St. Croix tennis bracelet designed by Whealan Massicott of ib designs.
