Five Good Hope students along with two chaperones flew to Boston for a week long trip in October which included college visits, history lessons, art museums and a tour of Woods Hole courtesy of Dr. Betsy Gladfelter, a NOAA visiting scientist and prominent former St. Croix resident. The trip was part of an exchange program begun last year by Dexter-Southfield, a private coeducational k-12 school located in Brookline , Massachusetts . Good Hope students were housed with Dexter-Southfield students and joined them for one day of classes.

Students Edward White, Rheilly Llanos, Jennifer Neltrhop, Sophia Monsegue, and Stephanie Thompson accompanied Upper School Director and College Counselor Patricia Swan and Upper School history teacher Anne Ogg on the trip. The week included a visit to the Plimouth Plantation, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Science Museum as well as college information sessions and tours. Colleges included Smith, Amherst, Harvard and Northeastern. In addition to the college tours, students were able to drive by many other college campuses such as Boston University, Emerson College, MIT and others in the Boston area.

Ms. Ogg commented "The Dexter-Southfield exchange is a great way for our students to make friends in the Boston area and to find out how typical New England families live. Our students were housed in diverse areas such as Beacon Street in Boston, and as far away as Wellesley and Dorchester."

Students from Dexter-Southfield will visit Good Hope in the spring as part of their Marine Biology program. Last year the schools sent a marine biologist and three of his students to learn about history, marine biology, and the culture and ecology of St. Croix . The Good Hope School students reciprocated, and are excited as they anticipate this exchange to become a tradition for The Good Hope School.

In addition to the reunion with Dr. Gladfelter, further St. Croix value was added to their trip with community service. Students carried two puppies as part of the St. Croix Animal Shelter's Pets from Paradise program, a service in which people can bring dogs to the Boston area. The pets were greeted at Logan airport by local volunteers who then delivered the puppies to their new homes.
