Dauri Shippey, soprano/choral conductor, will be artist-in-residence at the Good Hope School from November 29-December 3, 2004. She will be working with the Lower, Middle, and Upper School Choirs, in preparation for their holiday concerts, giving private lessons to students, working with the music faculty, and holding a master class on Wednesday evening, December 1 st from 6-8 p.m. in the James Savage Theatre on the Good Hope campus. The public is invited to this master class.
Ms. Shippey holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from the Juilliard School where she was awarded the Irving Berlin scholarship. She is the founder and director of Passaggio Chorale, a prize-winning choir based in Princeton, New Jersey. The members of this chorale have been featured with major choral foundations and opera companies, including Baz Luhrman's Broadway La Boheme . A spinto soprano, Dauri Shippey has been a featured soloist throughout the United States and abroad in operas, oratorios, and recitals. She was a finalist in the Pavarotti International Competition, Joy in Singing International, JS Bach International, the Metropolitan Opera auditions, and the Miss America Pageant. Also an accomplished pianist, Ms. Shippey is active in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). In the summers, she is a member of the voice faculty for the Spoleto Vocal Arts Symposium in Spoleto, Italy. Dauri Shippey's own teachers have included Beverly Peck Johnson, the famous voice teacher in New York who taught Renata Tebaldi and reigning diva Renee Fleming, and Judith Coen, currently one of New York's most popular teachers, who has many students singing on Broadway and at the Metropolitan Opera, and New York City Opera.
What is a master class? Carole Everett, Good Hope's Head of School, and herself an opera singer explained. "A master class is an opportunity for students to learn from a master teacher. The format features having a student present a song or aria. The singer then receives a critique from the teacher, followed by working on that composition from either a technical or dramatic point of view. This is all done in public, not in isolation as with a private lesson, so that the audience learns and participates as well. It is a great learning opportunity for all." Dauri Shippey's master class on Wednesday, December 1 st is open to all singers and lovers of music. St. Croix residents who sing in choirs, church groups, or are soloists are encouraged to attend. |
