Coastweeks is an annual nationwide celebration of coastal resources that focuses on beach cleanups throughout the United States.

Jane Coles, Chair of the Good Hope Science department, has organized at least 125 students and five faculty members to clean up the beaches around Good Hope and Frederiksted over a two-week period during Coastweeks 2004.

Good Hope's Upper School Biology classes have teamed up this week with Lower School students to clean up the beaches around Good Hope School. The Environmental and Marine science classes will doing clean-ups around Frederiksted on Monday, October 4 th at Sprat Hall; and Thursday, October 7 th from at Butler Bay.

As the students find the litter and garbage, they not only dispose of it, they also collect data on what types of debris they find. The information is used by NOAA and other international environmental groups to help stop the problem at the source.

During an assembly on Tuesday, October 5 th , Liam Carr, of the VI Marine Advisory Service, will be doing a presentation to the students on environmental stewardship and the need to keep our beaches clean.

Class participation in Coastweeks is an important aspect of Good Hope School's emphasis on community service. GHS promotes ocean awareness education at all grade levels. The beach cleanups give students an opportunity to play a valuable role in the preservation of St. Croix's natural environment.
